Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or heavily filled tooth, restoring its strength and shape. Made in porcelain, all-porcelain or gold, a lab-made crown is fitted over two visits. If you’d rather have your crown designed and fitted the same day, see our CEREC same-day restorations.

What it is and who it's for

A dental crown is a custom-made cap, fitted over a tooth that’s heavily filled, cracked or weakened, to restore its strength, shape and appearance. It suits anyone whose tooth has too little natural structure left for a filling alone, and is available in porcelain, all-porcelain or gold. Some crowns can be designed and milled in a single visit with our CEREC system — see our CEREC page for how that works.

How treatment works

  1. Preparation

The tooth is reshaped to make room for the crown, and an impression or digital scan is taken.

  2. Temporary crown

A temporary crown protects the tooth while your custom crown is made in a dental laboratory.

  3. Fitting

Once ready, your crown is checked for fit and shade, then permanently cemented in place.

What you can expect

  • Restores strength to a heavily damaged or filled tooth
  • Protects a tooth from further cracking or breakage
  • Custom-made in the material and shade that suits your tooth
  • A durable, long-term restoration when properly cared for

Common questions

When is a crown needed instead of a filling?

A crown is recommended when a tooth has lost too much natural structure to decay, cracking or a previous large filling for a filling alone to restore it safely. The crown covers and protects what’s left of the tooth.

Can I have a crown made the same day?

Yes. Our CEREC system designs and mills a ceramic crown chairside in a single visit, rather than the two-visit lab-made process. See our CEREC same-day restorations page for details.

How long does a lab-made crown take?

A lab-made crown usually takes two visits: one to prepare the tooth and fit a temporary crown, and a second, once the laboratory has made your permanent crown, to fit it.

How long do crowns last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a well-fitted crown can last many years, though this depends on the material chosen and how it’s cared for.
