Understanding root canal treatment

Whilst they can seem daunting and have a not-so-nice reputation, a root canal is a safe and effective procedure, commonly used to treat a tooth infection caused by bacteria from a decaying or damaged tooth. This infection can result in a painful toothache, an abscess, or swelling of the face, but if we catch the infection early, our highly skilled endodontists can perform a root canal and hopefully save the infected tooth from extraction.

A root canal can help to address:
  • A toothache

  • Tooth infection

  • Decaying tooth

  • Abscessed tooth

  • Severe tooth sensitivity

How much does a root canal cost?

Will a root canal be painful?

Arrow Down | Bow Lane Dental Group in London

Contrary to popular belief, a root canal usually isn’t a painful procedure because the nerve is already dead and with the modern technology we use at TG's – it's a lot simpler than it used to be.

I visited the Higham Ferrers surgery today for my initial consultation as a new patient and both the advice and service provided were excellent.  Highly recommend if you are looking for a new dentists.

Amy

Excellent dental surgery. Always clean and the staff are very polite and reassuring. My children can be abit nervous and the dentist always puts them at ease and makes them laugh. Highly recommended.

Joanna Valentine

Cannot fault my dentist at TG’s. Would highly recommend. Very professional. Felt very safe during Covid. A dental surgery you can trust.

What happens during a root canal?

Our teeth are hollow on the inside and filled with soft tissue, nerves, and blood vessels, otherwise known as the pulp.

This pulp can sometimes become infected if our teeth are broken or decayed, and the resulting infection may need to be treated with a root canal.

If you need a root canal treatment, our endodontist will take out the damaged or dead nerves and tissues and clean the infected tooth to get rid of the infection and of course, the pain. We’ll always try to save your tooth from extraction but if the infection is advanced and we can’t, we have some excellent tooth replacement options, such as dental implants, to have you smiling again in no time.

What to know about endodontics

Endodontics is a highly specialised branch of dentistry that focuses on treating problems associated with the inside of the tooth.

An endodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional three years of extensive training in endodontics, on top of their general dental education. They specialise in identifying and treating oral pain, most commonly performing root canal treatments and surgery if a tooth extraction is necessary.

Your root canal at TG’s Dental Suite

When you come to our clinics in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Higham Ferrers, Leicester, Earls Barton, and Rugby you’ll receive the best possible patient care.

The treatment may take more than one visit depending on the severity of the infection, but our team will make sure you feel completely comfortable and know what to expect.

Book an appointment

If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain, we’ll get you in for an appointment as soon as possible so we can identify the cause of the pain or infection.

If a root canal is the right course of treatment, we’ll discuss your options and take x-rays if they’re needed.

Root canal treatment

You’ll be given a local anaesthetic.

Once you’re comfortable, our endodontist will remove the infected pulp and thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth to remove all bacteria. The tooth is then filled with a special dental gum and sealed.

Fitting a crown or cap

Once your tooth has healed from the root canal, sometimes we’ll suggest getting a dental restoration, such as a cap or crown, put on top of it.

This will not only make it look better but also give it a super strong seal to keep it safe from any future damage.

Frequently asked questions about root canal treatments at TG’s Dental Suite

Arrow Down | Bow Lane Dental Group in London

The length of a root canal procedure depends on the complexity of the case and the number of teeth that need to be treated. In general, it can take between one to two hours.

Arrow Down | Bow Lane Dental Group in London

After a root canal, you may experience some soreness and sensitivity for a few days, and we recommend you avoid chewing on the affected tooth until it has been fullyhealed.

How long will a root canal last?

Arrow Down | Bow Lane Dental Group in London

A well-condensed root can last a lifetime with proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. To give the tooth the best long-term prognosis, we often advised a crown to be fitted on top.

What are the alternatives to a root canal?

If a root canal is not possible or recommended for you, the tooth may need to be extracted and replaced with a dental implant, bridge, or denture.

Arrow Down | Bow Lane Dental Group in London

If we catch the infection early enough, we can usually save the tooth. Sometimes the infection is more severe and if we can’t save the infected tooth, there are a few restoration options we replace the tooth with, such as a denture, bridge, or dental implant.
